We're making some renovations on the web site, so things are getting shifted around a bit.

Dear Aural Stagers-

You appear to share my love of all things audio drama. And some of you may know that I was honored to both perform and produce for the last decade at the venerable Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, which ended its illustrious career last November at the ripe old age of 36.

Well, many of the long-time supporters of that venerable group told some of us that they hoped this tribute to our beloved medium would continue. So since then, I've been honored to be part of a Steering Committee building a sort of "sequel" organization - "Celebrating Audio Theater (Old & New)."

Our website has just gone live:

http://seanreadsthenews.typepad.com/celebratingaudiotheaterol/

As a startup in many ways including financial, we need your support. If you'd be interesting in attending our Con, advance ticket sales will make this happen! (Contributions are welcome too, of course.)

And while we be continuing the well-deserved tribute to the days of Classic Network Radio, we are expanding the mission of the previous entity by welcoming new ideas and new people from the world of Contemporary Audio Drama. Our plan is to have performers from the worlds of OTR, MAD, Voice Over, and Audio Books.

We are still about the Past - but now about the Future, too.

If you hear the call of such a mission, as attendee or presenter - get in touch with us!

Best,
-Craig Wichman

I find that even films that deal with intense psychological conflict are very sound and music intensive. So putting them into audio drama format translates very well and is a lot of fun for me as a sound designer. Stephen Spielberg took an approach to Jaws that I have always taken to heart as a designer. He said horror is about what it unseen... that the audience brings their baggage with them and projects it into what is unseen. So audio drama is a means for me to manipulate that baggage and give people a hint of what I see, without telling them what they see.

This was a great story for the audio medium... really well done, too. It seems to me that audio drama has an advantage over film in that it is a more 'internal' art form-- like literature, it is more suited to dealing with deeper issues of the mind and heart than a largely visual-based medium.

In other words, audio drama seems well suited to psychological conflict, rather than physical conflict. Would you agree?

Hi Matt,

I actually just found this website tonight and am really impressed by your wealth of audio knowledge and your willingness to be so forthcoming with it. I definitely plan to spend some time reviewing your previous articles for any tips & tricks that can help me improve my productions.

Also, I just listened to Intensive Care today--it was fantastic...excellent sound, good acting, and well written.

I know you don't HAVE to do this, which is why I wanted to take the time to thank you for doing it!

Dear Matthew J. Boudreau,

As a would-be contributor to your awesome magazine, I would greatly appreciate it if you could announce the debut of my first novel Flight of the Cosmonaut. It was just published by The Fiction Works as an eBook.

I know it's a lot to ask, but I would be incredibly honored if you or one of your colleagues would post a review of the novel.

Thanks for all the years of great stories.

Sincerely yours,

Thanks, Henry. I'm actually going to cover that next week when I talk about diffusers . Records and bookshelves don't do much by way of absorption, but they make outstanding diffusers.

Another easy trick is you are using a basic living space to record in- bookshelves, filled
with books that create an irregular surface.

In the olden days of radio stations, it was shelves full of records and the paper or cardboard sleeves.

What you don't want are two smooth parallel walls for sound to bounce back and forth between.

[...] Depending on your setup, EQ is either the first or the second effect in your FX chain. It’s important not to confuse this EQ with the EQ for you track. Track EQ affects the sound and color of the instrument, voice or sound effect coming from the track and is either typically placed inline just after the inserts. This EQ, however is inserted as part of the bus effect chain we created in Part Two.
I have 17 audio drama programs written under the NightMare Alley name. These are in the "Twilight Zone" or Hitchcock Presents style, all written for an approx 23min show.
I have a couple on CD, and have all saved in Word format. I had them all on Celtx, but I can no longer find them.
If interested, drop me a not and I'll send a couple.
